Introduction

Edinburgh International Airport is one of Scotland’s major airports. Over five million passengers are handled by Edinburgh International Airport every year. Located eight miles west of Edinburgh’s city centre, Edinburgh International Airport is currently the UK’s eighth largest airport.

Facilities and Services

Edinburgh International Airport can offer its passengers flights to several scheduled and seasonal chartered destinations, including domestic; European; and transatlantic services.
Edinburgh International Airport has one terminal that provides passengers with a departure lounge containing a fair range of retail and catering outlets. Edinburgh International Airport also has currency exchange facilities, car hire representatives and information desks to meet arriving passengers needs.
Edinburgh International Airport has three executive Business Lounges. All of them can be found in the first floor departure area. The Servisair Lounge is available to all passengers where for a small fee they can enjoy business facilities such as fax; e-mail; and Internet access as well as complimentary drinks and snacks in a quiet and relaxing atmosphere. The other two lounges are exclusive to bmi and British Airwarys customers only.

Getting To The Airport

Road access to the Edinburgh International Airport is easy from the two-level junction on the A8 midway between the Gogar and Newbridge roundabouts. From Edinburgh join the A8 from the city bypass and proceed towards Glasgow. From the North and West join the A8 at the Newbridge roundabout and proceed towards Edinburgh. Follow signs for airport. For drivers using a satellite navigation system the airport’s postcode is EH12 9DN.
Edinburgh's main railway station (Waverly) is in the city centre and can be reached by taxi or bus. Connections from here serve Glasgow and many other destinations in Scotland and England. Most train services also operate from Edinburgh Haymarket station which is on the main bus route between the airport and city centre.
Public bus services stop outside the UK Arrivals doors on the terminal forecourt. An express bus service (Airlink 100) operates frequently to Edinburgh city centre.
National Express operates long distance coach services linking Edinburgh City centre and Waverley Bridge to a number of cities and other airports in the UK. Passengers can conect with the airport by taking the Airlink 100 from Waverley Bridge.

Parking at the Airport

There are several parking options available to passengers using Edinburgh International Airport.
Undercover parking available at the closest point to the terminal. It is ideal for seeing off or meeting friends and family. Recommended for stays of up to 2 hours.
Ideal parking for business or shorter trips. There is a car park a few meters from the check in offering under cover parking closest to the terminal. 'Short stay special' prices are available for stays of three days or more.
Drive your car to the airport and drop it off at the terminal forecourt. On your return your car will be waiting for you to collect it outside the terminal. A perfect parking solution for family or business trips.
Drop off your car at one of our long term car parks. A courtesy bus will drop you off on the forecourt at entrance to check in. The courtesy bus runs every five to ten minutes. The journey time is four to five minutes. An ideal parking solution for longer trips and family holidays.

History of Edinburgh International Airport

RAF base Turnhouse was demilitarised in 1947 and was given to the Ministry of Aviation to use as an airport as British European Airways launched the first Edinburgh–London shuttle service.

In 1971 the airport was purchased by BAA. It was six years after its purchase that it was officially opened as Edinburgh Airport by her Majesty the Queen.

In 2001 Currently there were 17 terminal stands for planes and numerous others which require passengers to be bussed to the terminal. The terminal building underwent major renovations and there are further expansions proposed for the future.

An extension to the terminal is currently being developed. This will add six gates on a new pier to the east of the current building and the extension is scheduled to open this year.
