History of Humberside International Airport

Scheduled flights commenced in 1935 at Yeadon Aerodrome. The destinations served were Newcastle, Edinburgh, Blackpool and the Isle of Man. The following year seasonal flights between Yeadon and Liverpool started, and work began on a terminal building but progress was halted when the RAF arrived at Yeadon in 1936. Civil aviation ceased from Yeadon in 1939 with the outbreak of World War II and did not recommence until 1947.

In 1955 Belfast, Jersey, Ostend, Southend, Isle of Wight and Dusseldorf were added to Yeadon’s destination list. In 1959 Leeds Bradford Airport Joint Committee took over and work soon began to develop the facilities at the airport.

Scheduled flights to London began in 1960 and Dublin was added shortly afterwards. A new runway was constructed which became operational in 1965.

By the late 1970s it was decided that after further runway extensions the airport’s status could be upgraded to a regional airport and work to this effect began in 1982. There was also extensive development to the terminal and the first phase of this work was opened in 1985. Restrictions relating to its operating hours were removed in 1994, and this meant that flights could leave and return to Leeds Bradford Airport at any time of day or night.

Work on the airport terminal has continued since 1996, and because of this there have been considerable growths in the terminal size and the passenger facilities.
