History of Humberside International Airport
Humberside International Airport, formerly an RAF base at Kirmington, opened as an airport for small airlines in 1960.
Nine years later, the local council who had plans to turn the site into a civil passenger airport bought it and in 1974 the passenger terminal was completed, and under the new name of Kirmington, the new civil airport was opened to the public. When the county was renamed Humberside shortly after this, the airport adopted the name of its new county and became Humberside Airport.
Towards the end of the 80s and start of the 90s, Humberside Airport undertook extensive developments, which included an extension to its runway. The improved airport was re-opened in 1992. Other refurbishments took place in 1996 which included a new passenger terminal, new passenger lounges and check in facilities.
